The Nature of the Enemy

  • a murderer and a liar -John 8:44
  • sometimes disguises as an angel of light- 2Cor 11:14
  • a thief -John 10:10
  • the accuser of the brethren -Rev 12:10, Zech 3:1-4
  • has no weapons -Col 2:15, Luke 11:22
  • seeks to devour -1Peter 5:8

Satan gets to us through:

  • continual sin and disobedience -Judges 2:11-14
  • resentment/bitterness -Matt 18: 21-35
  • fear -Job 1:10, Ecc 10:8, Job 3:25 (read together)
  • occult -Deut 18:10-14
  • generational transmission- Exodus 20:4-5

Ongoing sin—this is addiction—not necessarily to a substance, but more likely to a behavior. You’ve got to repent, and find a support group to help you by all means. They can really help. Satan uses our habitual sinning to shame us and break down our spirits until we become self-loathing defeatists. But we have a saving God, who knows us inside out, and is ready to redeem our lives no matter what condition we are in.

Trauma—this is the result of others sinning against us. If you’ve suffered any emotional wounding in your life, especially if it occurred before adulthood, you need to seek healing. If it was serious it will always provide a chink in your spiritual armor, where the accuser, our enemy, will try to get a foothold. Take care of yourself.

Occult—renounce any things of the occult that you have even dabbled in: astrology, Ouija boards, Tarot cards, white magic,--whatever it was, even if you think it was kind of harmless—name it and renounce it to God.

Family sin—sometimes called generational, sins passed on from one generation to another. We don’t always recognize certain behaviors as sin because they were so normative for us in our families of origin from the time we were born. When you recognize certain behaviors in this category, offer them up and renounce them to God. Ask Jesus to bring healing and renewal to your entire family and to the generations to come.

ST. FRANCIS PRAYER

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. That where there is hatred, I may bring love; that where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of forgiveness; that where there is discord, I may bring harmony; that where there is doubt I may bring faith; that where there is despair, I may bring hope; that where there are shadows, I may bring light; that where there is sadness, I may bring joy.

Lord grant that I may seek rather to comfort, than to be comforted; to understand, than to be understood; to love, than to be loved.

For it is by self-forgetting, that one finds; it is by forgiving, that one is forgiven; and it is by dying, that we awaken to eternal life. Amen.
